The Joy of Drawing
Published in Paperback by Watson-Guptill Pubns (April, 1993)
Author: Bill, Jr. Martin
Average review score:

Still Relevant in 2003!!
but the lessons on those pages are taught with such clarity they will stick with you and help when you go further with your talents into areas like colored pencil, watercolor, pen and ink, acrylics or even oils.

The lessons include things like perspective, a lesson taught in just about every book on art written today. It seems so many books cover this topic because it is such a hard topic to teach - notice I say teach and not learn. If it was easy to teach then more of us would learn it and would not have such a hard time with the concept. Bill Martin has touched something in his lessons on perspective, at least for me, and I will never have the same difficulty with perspective again. At least if I do in the future, I will have this little gem to pick up and refer to! He does not cover this topic quickly, but goes into it slowly and covers it quite completely, as he does most difficult topics. I will no sell the four or five books on my shelves devoted to perspective, books purchased to help clarify a topic once so unclear.

The only downside about his book is the section on color theory, which could be much more indepth. There is only a small chapter covering it at the end, almost as though it was an afterthought. It would have been great to see Mr. Martin tackle the important and often difficult topic of color with the same skill he had handled perspective and so many others in this great little book!

A wonderful book for the beginning artist.
This book is filled with examples that have you actually drawing from the very first page. The theories are very well explained and understandable. Examples are easy to emulate and you receive instant gratification from the many fine examples of techniques and theories.

A Jump for Life: A Survivor's Journal from Nazi-Occupied Poland
Published in Hardcover by Continuum Pub Group (December, 1997)
Authors: Ruth Altbeker Cyprys, Elaine Potter, and Martin Gilbert
Average review score:

persecution and heroism
This wartime memoir was discovered by the author's daughter in 1979, following her mother's death. It relates the events of the Nazi persecution in Poland, the suffering and degradation of the Warsaw Ghetto ... and an extraordinary courage and will to survive. Realizing the fate in store for her, Ruth made plans for escape. In the winter of 1943, she and two-year-old Eva were rounded up and crowded into a cattle-car for the fatal journey to Treblinka. A single chance for life remained to them: a perilous jump from the moving train. Their first night of freedom was spent huddling together in a freezing, abandoned dog-kennel, with Ruth licking her daughter's wounds. In their danger-fraught flight for survival, they encountered kind-hearted Catholics who risked their lives to aid a Jewish mother and child. This book is a powerful first-hand account of terrifying times, and a testimony to a mother's courage.

A great look into the Holocaust!
This would have to be one of the few diaries that tells the story of the horror of the Holocaust. Ruth lives through many tough situations, where her quick thinking saves her and her daughter Eva. It paints a clear picture of how people in Warsaw were treated, and how the Germans got rid of the Jews in the Ghetto and in Warsaw. It is rather sad, but it is true. If you read this story, you will learn first hand about the life that Jews lived in the Holocaust. I suggest reading it!

Kant and the Problem of Metaphysics (Studies in Continental Thought)
Published in Hardcover by Indiana University Press (October, 1990)
Authors: Martin Heidegger and Richard Taft
Average review score:

The origin of Deconstruction. Read before `Being and Time'.
Intended to be part of `Being and Time', but published separately and after BT. Heidegger's intention for `Kant and The Problem of Metaphysics' is straight forward; that is, Rational-Cognitive subjectivity (as presented in Kant's `Critique of Pure Reason') is not a tenable basis for metaphysics. Why? Because `time' alone can provide a foundation for metaphysics; thereby, dispensing with Reason, subjectivity and the rest of Kant's transcendental machinery. Heidegger claims to have `found Kant out'; that is, earlier editions of Kant's Critique has time as a much more important notion. Heidegger accuses Kant of recoiling from the primacy of time, and goes on to demonstrate that time is the basis of any possible metaphysics; to be carried out as a fundamental ontology via `Being and Time'.

Watch out for Heidegger's own recoil regarding spatiality and its relation to time.

Being and Time, Part II
This is perhaps the second most important text from Heidegger behind the monumental Being and Time. Where Being and Time ends abruptly without venturing into the destruction of the history of western ontology, the "Kant book" appears to be a sketch of the possible direction of Heidegger's fundamental ontology.

Surprisingly enough, Heidegger offers a rather faithful exegesis of Kant's discussion of the schematism from the Critique of Pure Reason. This is a close and careful reading of Kant which demonstrates Heidegger's skill at reconstruction of an existing text. The short Part One of this book is a work of art as Heidegger clearly defines Kant's project as a groundwork for metaphysics, that is, as ontology, by tracing the initial remarks by Kant to their Greek and scholastic origins. Therefore, Heidegger argues that the Kant of the First Critique does not bring forth a theory of knowledge (and against the Prolegomena that Kant is making a foundation for science), but rather, that the real project is a critique of metaphysics by returning to ontology as the groundwork for metaphysics. Thus, this project runs straight into Heidegger's own concerns of the possibility of anthropology.

Included in this edition is a transcript of the historical (and highly entertaining) debate between Heidegger and Ernst Cassier from the Davos lectures. Along with this, the editors have included other illuminating notes, drafts, and forwards.

Whether for or against Heidegger, this book clearly demonstrates the enormous philosophical skills of Martin Heidegger.

Very Detailed
In Karen's Accident, it takes place in winter when it is icey. Karen has been told it is too slipery to climb in her treehouse. But she does it anyway. Karen falls and skins her spleen. She has to go to the hospital. Find out what happens in Karen's Accident BSC little sister #81. If you think that's good than read #2 Karen's Rollor Skates. I love the BSC. I got into it when I was 8, now I'm 10 and still a BSC Fan.

Ann.M.Martin uses very good detail.
I have not read this particular book, but enjoy many others as you would a plate full of strawberries and cream.

So,now it is time to give the kittens away. Finding five perfect homes for five cute, cuddly and playful kittens will not be easy. But, Karen is determined to try her best! So, she brings in pictures of them to school. Everyone loved them. But will their parents say yes to have one? I loved this book so much I read it over and over again. I learned that kittens aren't as easy to take care of as they look, and they grow up really fast into adult cats. I would recommend this book for anyone thinking about getting a cat. It takes a lot of responsibility to take care of an animal.
